Web: Erosion of confidence

Holy Land Earth, which packages and makes available portions of soil from the Holy Land of Israel, has received its first shipment of genuine Israeli soil.

According to the website, "it can bring a touch of purity to any area of your life."

Dirt can bring purity?

"The rich, fertile soil - which is meant to be used in burial ceremonies, gravesite visits, or for any other use the purchaser feels appropriate - has been declared authentic by a certifying Rabbi, and is packaged in attractive, 16 oz re-sealable pouches. They will retail for $20.00."

And, it's imported with USDA approval, which (I guess) means it's safe to eat.

You may be a skeptic, though. You may be asking yourself, "How do I know this dirt is really from the Holy Land?" The FAQ page answers all questions:

"Holy Land Earth is authenticated under the supervision of Rabbi Velvel Brevda, director of the Geula Council in Jerusalem. Rabbi Brevda oversees each stage of Holy Land Earth’s distribution: the collection of the earth in Israel; the transportation of the earth overseas; the individual packaging and shipment of the earth. Rabbi Brevda certifies that Holy Land Earth is genuine Israel soil. Rabbi Brevda is a well known for his integrity and scrupulous attention to halacha (Jewish law). His certification is highly regarded worldwide."

"This is the culmination of many years of hard work," president Steven Friedman said. "The list of uses is endless."

Here's one use. Mixed with a little water from the River Jordan, you can even make holyland mud pies.

Thanks to Teri Jo Ryan of the Waco Tribune-Herald for sending us the news.
